The Yellow Earl – the Life of Hugh Lowther

THE BEACON Museum’s next exhibition spotlights one of history’s most colourful characters.

Hugh Lowther – known as The Yellow Earl because of his fondness for the colour – became the fifth Earl of Lonsdale in 1882.

He owned much of Whitehaven and its coalfields, as well as assets around the country, but is said to have lived an extravagant lifestyle and spent the family fortune.

The Earl was a sportsman and an adventurer – creating modern boxing and donating the Lonsdale belt. He was a patron of the Automobile Association (hence its yellow livery) and set up an animal charity.

This new exhibition covers the extraordinary highs and lows of Hugh Lowther’s unusual life.

It includes lots to do for children and families – igloo-making workshops (the Earl visited Alaska and claimed to have reached the North Pole), circus skills, Wii boxing and dressing up – as well as all the museum’s normal galleries and hands-on exhibits.

‘The Yellow Earl – the Life of Hugh Lowther’ opens at 10am on Saturday, April 2.

    Poppy Trek Copeland

The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to sign up for this year’s Poppy Trek events taking place on the 13th and 14th of August, to raise vital funds for service personnel, veterans and their families.

Fundraisers will have the opportunity to hike one of two iconic routes – a 9-mile trek to England’s highest war memorial at the summit of Scafell Pike, or a 9-mile trek to Great Gable, its beautiful neighbouring mountain and a brand-new route for 2022.

Both the 9-mile and 6-mile routes will take participants through the picturesque and unique landscapes of the Lake District before reaching the 963-metre or 886-metre peak. After stopping to take in the views across Cumbria, participants will share a moment of reflection in a minute’s silence, paying tribute to the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces community past and present.

“Two virtuoso musicians playing some of the most startling and original music you will ever encounter. Compelling, exciting and utterly original” says Phil Beer. Adam Summerhayes has been described as a ‘Paganini of the traditional violin’ (fRoots) and his remarkable playing has been lauded worldwide: “Like the direct descendant of the devil’s violinist Paganini” (Badische Zeitung); ‘Astonishing, all-out virtuosity’. (New York Times); “Intoxicating … virtuoso fiddle playing” (The Times); ‘breath-taking violin wizardry’ (stuff.co.nz). This duo, though, is not just about fireworks and virtuosity. Profound and eloquent, epic, haunting and dramatic, Adam Summerhayes’s ‘utterly compelling’ playing (BBC Music magazine) entwines with master accordionist Murray Grainger’s subtly woven tapestries of sound – “Grainger’s accordion with Summerhayes’s fiddle are especially beautiful” (Songlines). The pair play trad. tunes, particularly from the North East, write their own tunes and specialise in creating music in the moment.

    Stand & Deliver

Whitehaven Theatre Group take you on a ‘behind the scenes’ look into the world of the maternity ward in this Janet Shaw farce, Stand & Deliver. Join sex-mad nurse Lindsay Walker, and the four ladies on C Ward. The patients are: Vivien Withrington whose husband forgot to pay the private health insurance; Lizzie who has been caught out in the change of life; Nicola who gets confused easily and whose baby will have to match the soft furnishings in her house, and Michelle, whose only mistake was drinking alcopops and being 16. Three of these four have the husbands they deserve, who each tries to help his wife during the last few hours before ‘the big push’ in the only way they know best – by being a man, and either not being there or retiring as often as possible to the TV Room. Michelle, though, has her mum – a domineering matriarch who is desperate that the baby is adopted to prevent the shame of having to reveal that her daughter is an unmarried mother. The delivery rooms are full and so Vivien (who insisted on delivering in the birthing pool at the private ‘Fairhomes’ nursing home) and Nicola have to deliver in their beds on the ward, during which Sister Mitchell and Nurse Walker show their compassionate side. Through all this, the two domestics (Dot and Brenda) provide a down-to-earth patter of comfort to the labouring mothers, and barbed wit to the hospital staff. It may sound like an unlikely setting for a comedy play, but Janet Shaw has a talent for turning the most incongruous situation and poking fun at it, or the people in it. A side-splitting comedy that will leave you in stitches… from laughing.

Winner of The Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2020, Amy Trigg’s remarkable debut play Reasons You Should(n’t) Love Me is a hilarious, heart-warming tale about how shit our wonderful lives can be.

For a long time I didn’t know how it’d work.
Or what I’d be able to feel.
People would ask me if I could have sex and I’d feign shock and act wildly offended whilst secretly wanting to grab them by the shoulders and be like “I don’t know, Janet!”

Juno was born with spina bifida and is now clumsily navigating her twenties amidst street healers, love, loneliness – and the feeling of being an unfinished project.

    Mark Watson

Spiritual enquiry meets high-octane observational comedy as the Taskmaster survivor, multi-award-winner and No More Jockeys cult leader attempts to cram a couple of years of pathological overthinking into an evening of stand-up. Maybe we’ll even solve the huge problem. Doubt it, though.

We’ve all had some pondering to do about the fragility of life recently, but don’t worry, skinny national treasure Mark Watson has it covered. At 41, he’s halfway through his days on earth, according to the life expectancy calculator app he paid £1.49 for. That life is in the best shape in living memory… but one problem remains, and it really is a huge one.

There are tribute bands and then there are tribute bands… With members who have worked with the likes of David Bowie, Janet Jackson, Jon Bon Jovi, Brian Adams and Keith Emerson, and others who have performed on Broadway and in the Royal Albert Hall, The Floyd Effect isn’t just a bunch of enthusiasts who love the music of Pink Floyd, it’s a band of the highest calibre that loves the music of Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd’s recording career spanned almost three decades and, for its 2019 tour, The Floyd Effect has chosen two of their most remarkable albums to create its Wall Around The Moon tour. Forty years after its release, The Wall (1979) remains a classic of the genre, and the band will be spotlighting this together with a complete, unbroken performance of the iconic Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) – two albums that between them have sold 75 million copies worldwide. Concerts will also include tracks from albums such as Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Division Bell, delighting Pink Floyd fans everywhere.

Rightly renowned for the remarkable accuracy with which it performs the Pink Floyd canon The Floyd Effect faithfully recreates the music and intensity of a Pink Floyd concert without recourse to backing tracks, racks of computers, or other technological wizardry. Every note that you hear is played and sung by the band, making each concert a genuine ‘live’ event; powerful and emotional. And, of course, the music is supported by a dramatic light show. Completely revamped during 2018, this incorporates the iconic circular screen together with two sets of projections, smoke and lasers, all upgraded to make the show a truly immersive experience.

Sit back and enjoy The Floyd Effect as the band takes you on a journey through the music of Pink Floyd. Unless you were there the first time around, it was never as real as this.

Comedian Alun Cochrane has been seen on various TV comedy shows over the years, including Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and 8 Out of 10 Cats – he found these hard as he didn’t like interrupting people.

He’s also known as The Cockerel from Frank Skinner’s Absolute Radio show and the grumpily funny Centrist Dad guy they use pretty frequently on Radio 4.

This autumn, Alun is touring a show of both stand-up material (Stuff) and of his high quality on the spot frippery, impro, crowd work (Nonsense).

Stuff in the “Stuff” half may include some stuff about *actual* stuff. He has a jumper he might discuss, and he thinks his new car jokes could make the final edit – those are new jokes about his rather old car, which is pretty new to him, clear? There could be stuff on funerals, free speech, or feminism, and maybe a bit or two on the muddled mess of modern masculinity.

    Dr Jekyll

Brother Wolf is proud to present the return of its award-winning solo drama, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, guaranteed to have audiences on the edge of their seats.

Adapted and performed by award-winning actor, writer and producer James Hyland, this “powerful, intense, spellbinding and disturbing” show (The Yorkshire Times) takes a unique approach to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of civilisation versus savagery, good versus evil.

During his final lecture on the duality of humankind, the respectable Dr Jekyll reveals his strange association with the mysterious Edward Hyde and the shocking truth about his identity: that Hyde, unlike other human beings, is not only fundamentally evil, but also the very definition of it.

Reviewed as “a memorable, compelling and five star piece of theatre” (Everything Theatre), the production has been hailed by critics and audiences alike, winning Best Male Act (Solo Fest 2013).

A box office hit, its success is paralleled by Brother Wolf’s other acclaimed works including A Christmas Carol – As told by Jacob Marley (deceased), the “definitive telling of A Christmas Carol” (Redditch Standard), winner of Best Performer in Theatre (Fringe Report Awards 2012).

The Fourmost had its roots steeped in the eclectic 1960s Mersey beat boom and was part of  the Brian Epstein stable along with The Beatles, Billy J Kramer, Gerry and The Pacemakers,  Cilla Black and others. The band has evolved from enjoying 1960’s chart hits such as Hello  Little Girl (no.9) and A Little Loving (no.6) and less popular songs as I’m In Love (17), Baby I  Need Your Lovin (24), Girls Girls Girls (33) and a cover of George Formby’s Auntie Maggie’s  Remedy which failed to chart in the UK.

During the 1970s and the early 1980s like many of its peers, The Fourmost played mainly on  the cabaret circuit as it struggled to compete for appeal with disco, funk, glam rock and  punk.

Since the mid 1980s The Fourmost has enjoyed a golden era as part of the wider 1960s  revival scene and now appear throughout the UK and Europe playing at theatre’s, holiday  parks and 60s festivals to a diverse fan base.

The Fourmost have been continually active since forming as the Four Jays in 1959, the  personal may have changed over the years but the sound and look of the band have  remained the same.

The Fourmost are one of the most authentic 1960s bands currently on the circuit today, from  their Vox amps, Rickenbacker guitars and Ludwig drums down to their Italian made slim fitted suits and Cuban heel boots.
