  • The Ciderhouse Rebellion
    19:00 -21:00
    01-06-22

Adam Summerhayes has been described as a ‘Paganini of the traditional violin’ (fRoots) and his remarkable playing has been lauded worldwide: “Like the direct descendant of the devil’s violinist Paganini” (Badische Zeitung); ‘Astonishing, all-out virtuosity’. (New York Times); “Intoxicating … virtuoso fiddle playing” (The Times); ‘breath-taking violin wizardry’ (stuff.co.nz).

This duo, though, is not just about fireworks and virtuosity. Profound and eloquent, epic, haunting and dramatic, Adam Summerhayes’s ‘utterly compelling’ playing (BBC Music magazine) entwines with master accordionist Murray Grainger’s subtly woven tapestries of sound – “Grainger’s accordion with Summerhayes’s fiddle are especially beautiful” (Songlines).

The pair play trad. tunes, particularly from the North East, write their own tunes and specialise in creating music in the moment – it’s this unusually improvisatory focus that is uniquely magical.

A quest to create music in the moment, with no conscious thought between conception and playing, searching for unexpected magic and the possibility to create a deeper and perhaps more revealing narrative – “Gorgeous stuff” (BBC Radio 3). 2020 has brought three album releases (and one book) from The Ciderhouse Rebellion: Untold (CD February 2020) A 50 minute improvisation: three tracks, recorded live in three takes. (albums here) The InCider Sessions (CD May 2020) A limited edition of 100, signed and numbered CDs. Rosehill Theatre, Whitehaven CA28 6SE, UK

We’re delighted that award-winning singer Clare Teal is returning to Rosehill, accompanied by pianist Jason Rebello!

As much as she loves fronting her trio or big mini band, or singing with orchestras around the world, Clare – singer and former BBC Radio 2 presenter and a recent addition to the Jazz FM family – still revels in performing in more intimate venues accompanied by just piano.

From swing to sublime ballads, Clare’s duo concerts are renowned for their fabulous musicality coupled with her warm and witty storytelling, guaranteeing the audience something uniquely personal and always very special.

Jason is a celebrated performer in his own right. Classically trained but inspired by Herbie Hancock, he was the first jazz musician to secure entry as a classical student at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. 19:30 -22:00
    01-06-22
    10 Warwick Pl, Workington CA14 2BD, UK

See his uplifting music and style immortalised by West End star Ben Evans in this celebration of all things George.

Having toured across the UK and Europe in “The Best of Wham”, Ben has earned rave reviews up and down the country and beyond for his portrayal of his hero and just like George in 1986 the time has come to go solo and become the world’s number 1 pop star. Ben started honing his skill and impersonation of George at the age of 12 whilst studying at the renowned Sylvia Young Theatre school after winning the coveted “The Stage Newspaper” scholarship by singing Careless Whisper for the panel.

West End lead roles were to follow, playing Gavroche in Les “Miserables” and then going on to take to the stage in the title role in “Oliver” at the London Palladium before returning the next year to play the Artful Dodger, the only performer EVER to have achieved this double feat.

TV and Film roles came next but the West End stage again beckoned and after performing George’s famous rendition of “Somebody to love” for Bjorn Ulvaeus, Ben landed a lead role in the ABBA musical “Mamma Mia.”

Ben’s Big break was to come next playing the incomparable Frankie Valli in the hit show “Jersey Boys” followed by a stint as the cheeky lead singer of The Monkees, Davey Jones in “Monkey Business The Monkees Musical”. Having played all of these incredible leading men there was only one more dream to achieve, to perform as one of Britain’s greatest singer songwriters and a true Icon of popular music, George Michael.

Relive those Iconic moments of George’s incredible career from his flawless live vocals to those MTV defining music videos and early Top of the Pops appearances which gave us our first glimpses of the legend himself. This is a George Michael show like no other, put on your guy liner, choose life and come down to your local theatre to relive the hit career of the one and only George Michael.

  • An Evening with Blowers
    19:30 -22:00
    01-06-22
Rosehill Theatre, Whitehaven CA28 6SE, UK

My Dear Old Things is an absolute treat for the cricket connoisseur and a wonderfully engaging evening for all.

In cricketing terms, Covid’s reign stopped play for a couple of seasons. In another year, dear old Blowers would have knocked off a century of theatre shows, appeared on numerous TV programmes and regaled folk with his hilarious anecdotes at functions up and down our green and pleasant land.

However, you can’t keep a good man down. Being confined to the pavilion has given Henry Blofeld the opportunity to spend more time with loved ones; to reconnect with his Norfolk roots and to reflect on his truly extraordinary life. He has written two books, recorded a daily vodcast for the recent tests and made three autobiographical films for streaming, under the collective title At Home With Henry.

And work on these films has inspired a new theatre show, My Dear Old Things, which Henry is touring from this October. In this, Blowers shares tales of treasured moments and people, past and present, while looking ever forward to more fun and games as he resumes his highly entertaining innings. Ladies and Gentlemen, the covers are well and truly off!

  • Christine Bovill’s Piaf
    19:30 -21:30
    01-06-22
Rosehill Theatre, Whitehaven CA28 6SE, UK

Christine Bovill threads her remarkable journey in the world of French song with the life and works of Edith Piaf.

No glamour. No gimmicks. No pretence. Nothing but a voice, singing of life’s triumphs and tragedies. Christine Bovill’s Piaf is both a personal narrative and a powerful musical homage to one of France’s most endearing icons.

An award-winning songwriter in her own right, Christine has toured throughout Europe with her self-penned homage to the Little Sparrow, appearing on BBC News, ITV and on BBC Radio 4’s series Soul Music.

During her sold-out run at the famous Spiegeltent, as part of the 2012 Edinburgh Festival, Christine realised a lifelong dream when she shared the stage with Charles Dumont, great friend of Piaf and, most famously, composer of Non, Je ne Regrette Rien. They performed several songs together to close the show. The publicity around the event drew articles from the national press, culminating in Christine’s live appearance on BBC’s Newsnight, as a finale to the festival review programme.

Piaf was awarded the Fringe laurels for Total Sell Out Show 2011 and 2012 and received five-star reviews from some of the most respected publications, including The Scotsman.

    10 Warwick Pl, Workington CA14 2BD, UK

Simon Evans: The Work of the Devil

Simon Evans’ last show, Genius 2.0 ( “A Masterclass” ***** The Scotsman) provided an hilarious analysis of the departure of any visible sign of intelligence from modern life. But his new show raises the stakes, with his usual excoriating views of a world on fire given a perspective shift from personal revelations that turned his world upside down this year.

“A gripping and, ultimately heart-warming tale… rich with Evans’ wit and caustic observation.” ★★★★ The Scotsman

“”When he gets stuck into his show in earnest he guides us to a terrifically tender conclusion that he handles intelligently, informatively, amusingly and unsentimentally… Dynamite” ★★★★ The Times

“You expect a high standard of stand-up from this veteran performer. But in sharing something so deeply personal, he’s exceeded what seemed to be his full potential… I’d expect it to get even better when it goes out on tour. Outstanding stuff.” ★★★★ ½ Chortle

Despite international tours (UAE, Germany and previously USA, Scandinavia, Caribbean etc.), corporate clients (Mitsubishi, NatWest) and even book appearances (The Rocker, Send In The Clones), they’ve shoehorned a co-headline tour with tribute giants Livewire into 2016, along with their own stand-alone tour, in what will be an exhausting year-long schedule. Sweeney Entertainments present T.Rextasy, returning to Rosehill in December 2021 for a rocking good night with The Greatest Hits Tour.

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including Love to Boogie, Telegram Sam, Jeepster and 20th Century Boy.

T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. They are accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan and T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management. They have been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’.

A compilation of an extraordinary new body of music:

12 traditional and original tunes born of social distancing, forged in lockdown and created despite isolation. Rúnian (CD and book of poems – September 2020) The two musicians are joined by wordsmith Jessie Summerhayes as Words From A Fiddlers Daughter, for an immersive and cinematic collection of folk-tone-poems woven between and around spontaneously created music.

So far it has racked up 1.8 million views and divides opinion amongst fans of the Welshman’s classic. She subsequently released her slowed down version, that highlights the mournful and yearning lyrics to give the song new meaning, as a download single. The significance of this recording?

The boys are back!

  • The Fourmost History
    20:00 -23:00
    25-06-22-25-07-22
    4 Market Square, Millom LA18 4HZ, UK

The Fourmost had its roots steeped in the eclectic 1960s Mersey beat boom and was part of  the Brian Epstein stable along with The Beatles, Billy J Kramer, Gerry and The Pacemakers,  Cilla Black and others. The band has evolved from enjoying 1960’s chart hits such as Hello  Little Girl (no.9) and A Little Loving (no.6) and less popular songs as I’m In Love (17), Baby I  Need Your Lovin (24), Girls Girls Girls (33) and a cover of George Formby’s Auntie Maggie’s  Remedy which failed to chart in the UK.

During the 1970s and the early 1980s like many of its peers, The Fourmost played mainly on  the cabaret circuit as it struggled to compete for appeal with disco, funk, glam rock and  punk.

Since the mid 1980s The Fourmost has enjoyed a golden era as part of the wider 1960s  revival scene and now appear throughout the UK and Europe playing at theatre’s, holiday  parks and 60s festivals to a diverse fan base.

The Fourmost have been continually active since forming as the Four Jays in 1959, the  personal may have changed over the years but the sound and look of the band have  remained the same.

The Fourmost are one of the most authentic 1960s bands currently on the circuit today, from  their Vox amps, Rickenbacker guitars and Ludwig drums down to their Italian made slim fitted suits and Cuban heel boots.
