We’re looking forward to throwing open Rosehill’s doors for a big “welcome back” party in September. After 18 challenging months, we’ll be hosting a free day of fun events and activities for all the family to come and enjoy.

You can expect a variety of live performances from an array of talent – both from West Cumbria and further afield. And among the highlights will be six acoustic acts presented as part of the BBC Music Introducing in Cumbria showcase!

There’ll also be crafts, entertainment, refreshments and much more.

Head to Rosehill between 11am and 5pm on Saturday 25 September to enjoy engaging taster sessions, live music and family entertainment.

Janice Murray, of Morgan Murray Arts, will run a free craft station offering an opportunity for children and adults to create rosettes based on personal and unique designs.

In addition, the local DisChord Choir, who rehearse at Rosehill, will showcase West Cumbrian talent with a performance of favourite tunes, joined by young musicians from local music organisation Soundwave.

Keeping everyone on their toes will be Northern Soul dance duo Sal & Pops, who will give the whole family a chance to learn new moves, brush up on the basics or just watch and enjoy the groove while they demonstrate their fancy footwork and brand-new soul sounds.

Courtesy of BBC Music Introducing in Cumbria, live acts will play during the day, featuring some of the best up-and-coming talent from across the county, including Marblmoon, Gumshoe and an acoustic set from Whitehaven’s Northern Lights. They will start at 12.30pm in the theatre and run at various intervals.

There will also be storytelling and poetry performances, including Steve Wharton, who presents an extract from his show Cuckoo, Barf and Stink, an exclusive walkabout display from an up-and-coming magician, 23-year-old Lord Taran Harvey-Chadwick, and more.

Refreshments from local companies will be available to purchase and Messel’s Bar will be open for drinks and nibbles throughout the day.

There will also be a special film running on a loop in the Barn at Rosehill. Encountering Wordsworth is an inclusive large-scale music, poetry and multi-media project celebrating Wordsworth’s 250th birthday. Featuring young Cumbrian performers, it is co-produced by Cumbria Music Hub and Orchestras Live in partnership with Wordsworth Grasmere and Cumbria Development Education Centre.

Free parking is available at Rosehill, located just off the A595 north of Whitehaven.

At Home In The Steep Places charts Bill’s life from a challenging childhood in the Cumberland coalfields and involvement in the mines rescue teams at Lowca and William Pit disasters to his pioneering of new rock climbing routes in 1940s Buttermere.

He became an abstract landscape painter after emigrating to Australia in 1952 where he developed ‘burnt’ paintings. He returned to Cumbria in 1980 and drew on Japanese influences to paint his beloved fells, which he had resumed climbing with new friends such as Bill Birkett, Sir Chris Bonington and Don Whillans.

Filmed in England, Australia and Japan, the film is presented by Steve Wharton, Natalie Wilson and Perrin Walker. It features interviews with people who knew Bill, climbing and art specialists, rare archive material, photographs by the Abraham Brothers and a soundtrack by Cumbrian and Australian musicians.

Simon Evans’ last show, Genius 2.0 ( “A Masterclass” ***** The Scotsman) provided an hilarious analysis of the departure of any visible sign of intelligence from modern life. But his new show raises the stakes, with his usual excoriating views of a world on fire given a perspective shift from personal revelations that turned his world upside down this year.

“A gripping and, ultimately heart-warming tale… rich with Evans’ wit and caustic observation.” ★★★★ The Scotsman

“”When he gets stuck into his show in earnest he guides us to a terrifically tender conclusion that he handles intelligently, informatively, amusingly and unsentimentally… Dynamite” ★★★★ The Times

“You expect a high standard of stand-up from this veteran performer. But in sharing something so deeply personal, he’s exceeded what seemed to be his full potential… I’d expect it to get even better when it goes out on tour. Outstanding stuff.” ★★★★ ½ Chortle

Simon Evans is the star of Live at the Apollo, Mock The Week, BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth & Simon Evans Goes To Market. Simon has made appearances on This Week, Question Time, Celebrity Mastermind, Pointless Celebrities and Mastermind The Professionals.

Direct from the Edinburgh Fringe comes a comedy-and-cooking show from award-winning stand-up George Egg, who makes real gourmet food live on stage!

In his first show, Anarchist Cook, George made a meal in a hotel room with the complimentary appliances. In his second, DIY Chef, he was stuck in a shed cooking with tools. In Movable Feast, he’s on the road!

It’s time for Planes, Trains and Automob-meals (sorry!).

During an evening of live cooking and laugh-out-loud comedy about making food on the move, George demonstrates ways to procure items from the train buffet trolley, beat the rip-off restaurant prices at the airport and even shows you how to turn unexpected roadworks into a picnic.

It’s cheeky, anarchic and creative, a multi-sensory show rich in humour and sprinkled with handy hacks.

This is gourmet food cooked live in the most unconventional ways and with the opportunity to taste the results at the end, provided you can stop laughing…

Sally Barker is a British singer and songwriter, known for her solo work and as a founding member of the Poozies. In 2014, she was a finalist in the BBC One talent contest The Voice, finishing in joint second place

In June 2020 Sally uploaded a YouTube video of her re-imagining of the Tom Jones song ‘It’s Not Unusual’ to celebrate the venerable singer’s 80th Birthday. So far it has racked up 1.8 million views and divides opinion amongst fans of the Welshman’s classic. She subsequently released her slowed down version, that highlights the mournful and yearning lyrics to give the song new meaning, as a download single. The significance of this recording? Sally was Tom’s finalist on The Voice UK in 2014 and although people mistakenly think she won, such was the impact she had on that show, Sally walked away without the main prize coming in joint 2nd.

Christine Bovill threads her remarkable journey in the world of French song with the life and works of Edith Piaf.

No glamour. No gimmicks. No pretence. Nothing but a voice, singing of life’s triumphs and tragedies. Christine Bovill’s Piaf is both a personal narrative and a powerful musical homage to one of France’s most endearing icons.

An award-winning songwriter in her own right, Christine has toured throughout Europe with her self-penned homage to the Little Sparrow, appearing on BBC News, ITV and on BBC Radio 4’s series Soul Music.

During her sold-out run at the famous Spiegeltent, as part of the 2012 Edinburgh Festival, Christine realised a lifelong dream when she shared the stage with Charles Dumont, great friend of Piaf and, most famously, composer of Non, Je ne Regrette Rien. They performed several songs together to close the show. The publicity around the event drew articles from the national press, culminating in Christine’s live appearance on BBC’s Newsnight, as a finale to the festival review programme.

Piaf was awarded the Fringe laurels for Total Sell Out Show 2011 and 2012 and received five-star reviews from some of the most respected publications, including The Scotsman.

Brother Wolf productions return to Rosehill with the ultimate Halloween story, Dracula’s Guest.

Based on the works of Bram Stoker.

Adapted, produced and directed by James Hyland.

    Dracula.

An ancient creature, embittered by the burden of immortality and the intolerance of those who would decry him monster. Alone in his keep, but for the memories of centuries past. A living death that only a vampire could understand. Or perhaps a special guest or two. Providing they can live long enough to survive their host’s unique hospitality and his deliberate attempts to drive them insane.

Based on the bone-chilling works of Bram Stoker, Dracula’s Guest takes you into the dark heart of Victorian horror to reveal the very meaning of terror and the consequences of collective evil and personal spite.
