Medieval Medicine at The Beacon Museum

Horrible history comes to Cumbria – museum reveals grisly secrets of Medieval Medicine.
If you are partial to a bit of horrible history there’s a gruesome – but family friendly – treat in store at a Cumbrian museum.

From Saturday, June 19, you’ll be able to discover the often-grisly cures used to treat patients in Medieval England.

It’s all part of the “Medieval Medicine” exhibition, at The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven.

It uncovers the treatments dished out by different medical practitioners centuries ago. You can

    • Delve into a barber surgeon’s tool chest
    • View an apothecary’s treatment table
    • Explore how physicians used the colour of urine to diagnose different diseases

Medieval Medicine at The Beacon Museum

The stories of a barber surgeon, an apothecary, the cunning woman, a religious figure and a physician showcase the archaic and diverse approaches to medical treatment in the Middle Ages.

‘Medieval Medicine is a touring exhibition from The JORVIK Group of Attractions, operators of the award-winning JORVIK Viking Centre.

Visitors can learn still more about disease, illness and treatment through three medieval skeletons on display, including one showing signs of leprosy.

The exhibition also includes an exclusive short film, written by Terry Deary – author of the Horrible Histories series – entitled A Touch of Plague as part of the family-friendly content on offer.

Heather Holmes, Customer and Visitor Experience Manager, at The Beacon Museum, said: “We are thrilled to have a JORVIK exhibition, once again, at the museum.

“Visitors can explore various historical medical practices, delve inside a barber surgeon’s tool chest or investigate a physician’s uroscopy wheel.

“The exhibition is family friendly and there are activities on offer for everyone to enjoy.”

The exhibition runs from June 19 to September 5, 2021.
Tickets: Adults £7, Concessions £5.50, Children £3.50, under 3’s free, family ticket £17.50

The Croods have survived their fair share of dangers and disasters, from fanged prehistoric beasts to surviving the end of the world, but now they will face their biggest challenge of all: another family.

The Croods need a new place to live. So, the first prehistoric family sets off into the world in search of a safer place to call home. When they discover an idyllic walled-in paradise that meets all their needs, they think their problems are solved… except for one thing. Another family already lives there: the Bettermans.

The Bettermans (emphasis on the “better”) – with their elaborate tree house, amazing inventions and irrigated acres of fresh produce – are a couple of steps above the Croods on the evolutionary ladder. When they take the Croods in as the World’s first houseguests, it isn’t long before tensions escalate between the cave family and the modern family.

*RELAXED SCREENING: Please note our screening at 2pm on Wednesday 4 August is a relaxed screening, adapted to suit people who prefer a more informal environment. There is no one in music quite like Mark Harrison. He is widely considered one of the most original and interesting artists around. His highly individual, all-original music has taken him and his band to some of the top venues and festivals in the UK, attracting acclaim wherever he goes. Recent appearances on BBC Radio 2, as guest on Cerys Matthews’s show and on the Pick Of The Week show, have further added to his growing reputation. Described at BBC Radio 2 as ‘quirky’ and an artist who ‘makes you think afresh’, Mark is a totally original songwriter, a stunning guitarist, and a master storyteller. Mark’s live shows are well-known not only for the music but also for his introductions and explanations of the songs, delivered in a manner often described as ‘wry’ and ‘dry’.

Mark is a songster, and his songs cover all manner of non-standard subjects. With catchy tunes, lyrics than intrigue and engage, and striking rhythms, they make you smile, think and move. A thrilling, rhythmic, &nger-picker and slide player, with a very distinctive style, Mark tours extensively with the band. He has released six albums which have been unanimously acclaimed across a wide range of areas of the music world, receiving a very great deal of airplay and highly enthusiastic reviews in the UK, Europe and the US. 2021 sees the release of Mark’s much awaited new album, THE ROAD TO LIBERTY.

The Music of John Denver returns to Millom.

    Chris Bannister

In 2010 Chris began touring with his solo show ‘The Music of John Denver’ celebrating the life and work of the legendary singer/songwriter in his own unique way.

Unlike “lookalike” tributes, Chris’s uncanny ability to recreate the sound of John Denver has brought him widespread acclaim. It is a testament to his talent that Chris now has an international reputation and no surprise to learn that he regularly performs in Aspen Colorado to sell out audiences.

Legends of Irish music and song The Fureys return to Rosehill on Thursday 31 March 2022.

Renowned for their hit songs I Will Love You, When You Were Sweet 16, The Green Fields of France, The Old Man, Red Rose Café and more, The Fureys have been entertaining audiences worldwide for 42 years

Audiences have included former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Irish President Mary McAleese and the late Pope John Paul, while former British Prime Minister Tony Blair publicly stated his favourite peace song of all time is The Fureys’ Green Fields of France and Irish President Michael D Higgins attended their performance in National Concert Hall.

The oldest of the brothers Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty and Alex Campbell.

In 1969, with his brother Finbar, he was the special guest for the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem throughout the USA and Canada. In 1971, he moved to mainland Europe where he toured for seven years.

Dave Stewart, from the Eurythmics, has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on guitar when they met up in the North East of England while Dave was still a teenager.

The Fureys have performed several times at Rosehill over the years, the most recent being a sell-out show in May 2018.

Sweeney Entertainments present T.Rextasy, returning to Rosehill in December 2021 for a rocking good night with The Greatest Hits Tour.

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including Love to Boogie, Telegram Sam, Jeepster and 20th Century Boy.

T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. They are accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan and T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management. They have been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’.

Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages – If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you!

Simon Evans’ last show, Genius 2.0 ( “A Masterclass” ***** The Scotsman) provided an hilarious analysis of the departure of any visible sign of intelligence from modern life. But his new show raises the stakes, with his usual excoriating views of a world on fire given a perspective shift from personal revelations that turned his world upside down this year.

“A gripping and, ultimately heart-warming tale… rich with Evans’ wit and caustic observation.” ★★★★ The Scotsman

“”When he gets stuck into his show in earnest he guides us to a terrifically tender conclusion that he handles intelligently, informatively, amusingly and unsentimentally… Dynamite” ★★★★ The Times

“You expect a high standard of stand-up from this veteran performer. But in sharing something so deeply personal, he’s exceeded what seemed to be his full potential… I’d expect it to get even better when it goes out on tour. Outstanding stuff.” ★★★★ ½ Chortle

Simon Evans is the star of Live at the Apollo, Mock The Week, BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth & Simon Evans Goes To Market. Simon has made appearances on This Week, Question Time, Celebrity Mastermind, Pointless Celebrities and Mastermind The Professionals.
