A unique collaboration that spans a continent, The Beacon is proud to host Discover the Vikings, an exclusive Viking themed exhibition, from 29 June until 29 September.
Set to delight locals and tourists alike, this unique combination of artefacts, replicas and digital interactives unearths the North of England’s rich Norse heritage.
Discover the Vikings is an amalgamation of two of The JORVIK Group’s touring exhibitions, Valhalla and Heroes.
Valhalla explores life and death in Viking Britain through 1,000-year-old artefacts and a replica boat dressed for a ship burial.
In Heroes, learn what the archaeological evidence can reveal about this heroic age through human remains bearing the battle injuries of a warrior. Step inside a Viking tent for the full atmospheric experience, smells and all!
The Beacon Museum’s permanent exhibition includes a vital clue in the Norse story of West Cumbria. Recent studies on the Beckermet Norse hoard, found in 2014, have revealed that the silver ingots originated from all across mainland Europe, even containing traces of Islamic dirham coins; proof if any were needed that the Norsemen connected our region to a global trading network.
